The following is a translation of readable portions of a letter dated 11.3.42, enclosed in one from the above address. The letter was carried out from Hongkong, by the writer for a Mr. Saleh, and was carried through the Japanese occupied territories" in the shoë or the person bringing the letter:=
"By the Grace of God we are quite well. Blessed is God's name that' we Indians as an exception get, at reasonable prices, eatables such as rice, flour ghee, etc. We are passing reasonably comfortable days, buying vegetables etc, in the markets. We are 42 in all, including MAICHAN'S (MAIPAN) family of 22 and our cook etc and my friend's family. Maichan does not give any allowance for 6 of his men but with God's help we pull on. There is strict rationing for eatables and drinks, but looking to the times, it is sufficient for the bodily health.
